I’m just going to come right out and say this: I love the name Edwidge Danticat.
To be honest, until five minutes ago, I’d never heard of Edwidge Danticat. But then The Strand, my favorite book store in the whole wide world, sent me an email featuring a link to her bio, bibliography and favorite titles. Now I know that Edwidge Danticat is an acclaimed Haitian-American writer whose short stories have appeared in 25 periodicals. And, she turned her masters thesis into the novel, “Breath, Eyes, Memory,” which was later chosen as an Oprah’s Book Club selection (Nice one, E.D.).
Yet from the moment I first laid eyes on the name Edwidge Danticat, my brain basically exploded.
I mean, seriously, Edwidge Danticat? Isn’t that a character in a Harry Potter book?
Or perhaps Edwidge Danticat is a pen name for Benedict Cumberbatch, one he chose because it sounded fancy yet had fewer syllables than his own.
No, wait. I’m thinking Edwidge Danticat is the name of the woman who created the first recipe for Edy’s ice cream.
Or maybe Edwidge Danticat is the hero of a series of children’s books about a dainty cat named Edwidge.
The possibilities are endless.
Put quite simply, Edwidge Danticat has one the world’s coolest names.
